Meet the apprentice – Zac from Kink Hair
We talk to LHAA apprentice Zac McCormack about his apprenticeship at Kink Hair, working alongside the great Theo Silveston.
If you’re a new school leaver, you’re probably in that tricky place where you’ve recently taken your exams and now you’ve got to wait until August to find out the results. We know what that feels like because we’ve been there ourselves. Even on the most beautiful summer’s day, there’s still that niggling anxiety at the back of your mind: what will my exam results be? Will I get the grades I’m hoping for? If I don’t get the grades, what am I going to do with the rest of my life?
It’s time to stop worrying and start enjoying those well-deserved rays, because at the LHAA it’s not your exam results we’re interested in. If you want to become an apprentice and begin a career in hairdressing or barbering, what matters is you, your commitment, and your passion to succeed in the best industry in the world. Okay, so we might be a little bit biased when we call hairdressing the best industry in the world but, as far as we’re concerned, that’s exactly what it is – and if you want to be a part of it, we can help you make that ambition a reality.
None of this is meant to imply you’re not going to get the grades you’ve worked so hard for, but whether your results are amazing or you haven’t done as well as you wanted, the LHAA is here for you.
Let’s look at it this way. Grades aren’t everything, and not everyone performs well in an exam room situation. Even if you do (lucky you!) the grades you’ve achieved are only part of your story. One of the great things about being a hairdresser is it’s one of the few careers that allows your personality to shine, and who you are is equally as important as what you can do.
Take a look at some of the world’s most successful hairdressers – it’s hard work and self-belief that got them where they are today. Many of them left school without any qualifications at all. It’s true that a big handful of them learned their trade by finding work in a salon and slowly building up their skills ‘on the job’ but that’s only because hairdressing apprenticeships weren’t available to most of them when they were starting out. If they’d had the benefits of an apprenticeship, they’d have learned their skills and developed their careers a lot faster.
When you’re a LHAA apprentice you’ll be learning your skills from the best tutors in the hairdressing business, and you’ll also be given an immediate placement with one of our salon partners. That means you won’t just be honing your talents in the classroom, you’ll also be benefiting from invaluable work experience in the real world. On top of that, you’ll also be earning while you learn. Just think about all the advantages you’ll have once you’ve completed your LHAA training: cutting-edge hairdressing skills (no pun intended!), invaluable industry experience and contacts (and no worries about finding a job), no scary education debt to pay back, and immediate financial independence because you earned your own money while you trained.
That’s why apprenticeships are the future, and why more people are choosing apprenticeships over continuing into expensive further education like university, or jumping into the first job they’re offered. which is usually not a job they really want to do, and generally leads to a great big dead-end.
Your LHAA qualification will start you on a hairdressing journey where there are no dead-ends. You’ll have infinite possibilities for the whole of your career. You could work in a salon or start your own business and work for yourself, you could take your hairdressing talents overseas or onto a cruise ship, you could be a stylist behind-the-scenes in film and television or on magazine and advertising shoots, you could become an industry influencer or even a brand ambassador… and those are only a few directions your career could take you after you’ve trained at the LHAA.
