Is your salon ready for Christmas? Now that November is almost behind us, the sprint towards Santa has well and truly begun. But are you marketing your salon as well as you could? Here are our top five festive tips for enticing more customers into your grotto of glam!
It always feels like Christmas as soon as the festive window displays start appearing on the high street, so make sure your salon doesn’t get left behind. All you need is a little extra glitz to dazzle the attention of passers-by or why not get really unmissable and feature a Christmas tree surrounded by heaps of gift-wrapped styling product? Your salon windows are invaluable free advertising so take the time to make them look alluring and, if you’re in a location with plenty of late-evening footfall, think about keeping the lights on for a few more hours after closing. You never know who might be wandering past thinking about the haircut they need for the Christmas party!
Putting up the salon Christmas tree and hanging some festive bunting will definitely put you and your customers in the yuletide mood but wouldn’t it be even better if your decorations could sell your services too? How about transforming that bunting into some creative mini-advertising, like a string of Chrissy tree or Chrissy angel silhouettes announcing all your fantastic seasonal offers? Or maybe a raffle tree or raffle crackers where, for a small donation to charity, your customers could win a small gift or a discount for a new year hair styling? Also, don’t forget the power of your salon’s reception area – everybody loves a Christmas bargain so dress up your reception desk with a tempting array of salon gift vouchers, reduced-price hair products, and plenty of flyers offering New Year early-bird discounts (a great way to get advance bookings for the traditionally quieter months of January and February.) Oh, and don’t forget the all-important ‘Almost sold out! Buy yours now to avoid disappointment!’ countdown as Christmas Eve approaches.
If you’ve got a salon website, make sure it’s ready for Christmas. That means posting a cover photo with a Christmas theme (why not a shot of your salon exterior and your fabulous Christmas window display?) and adding important extra information like Christmas opening hours, seasonal promotions, and festive events. Don’t forget to do the same for your social media pages and keep them updated at least three or four times a week until the big day (don’t worry, it won’t take as much work as it sounds - especially if you try out the ideas we’ll mention in a moment!)
Always remember that this is a busy time of year for everyone and booking a hair appointment can be as last-minute as doing the Christmas shopping. With that in mind, make your client’s life as easy as possible by including your festive opening hours and any Christmas promotions on your answer-machine message. Also, adjust your till software so that your Christmas offers and opening hours are printed on all your receipts. It shouldn’t be difficult to do and it’s great free marketing.
Share some Christmas spirit by sending your regular clients a quick Christmas email and maybe including a discount voucher for their next cut, or a 2-for-1 offer so they can introduce a friend to your salon in the new year. Not only does it show your appreciation for their loyalty (as well as some seasonal thoughtfulness), it quietly reminds them to start thinking about their next visit – or maybe even popping in for a trim or colour before Santa arrives!
Christmas is all about giving, so why not hold some seasonal events in your salon? They could range from a small after-hours party for your regular customers (encourage referrals by asking them to bring a friend) to being a collection point for a local charity (and/or donating a percentage of each haircut to charity throughout December… that’s great karma as well as fantastic PR!) to creating a Christmas photo booth in the corner of your salon so your happy clients can show off their new look and you (with your client’s permission, of course) can get some extra promotional content for your social media. Or why not add a competitive element like a ‘Best Christmas selfie’ contest (make sure they mention your salon’s username in their post), a Christmas painting competition for your client’s children or, on your website or Facebook pages, a scavenger hunt with fun clues about your salon and services that you can update every couple of days? Or how about an advent calendar/12 days of Christmas promotion, where each day you reduce prices on a different product or service? Be careful not to over-extend yourself with promotions, though. Only offer as much as you can deliver, and don’t risk compromising your flawless customer standards.
There’s only a few weeks left until Christmas, but that’s still plenty of time to get your salon so buzzing you won’t hear the chiming of sleigh bells over the ringing of the cash register and the bleep of the credit card machine! Have a happy, busy and profitable December everybody… and don’t forget to have fun!
