You know how good it feels when you get everything sorted out before Christmas, so you can really relax and look forward to the new year? Hopefully that’s a feeling you’re enjoying right now! But if you're ending 2018 wishing you'd pursued your hairdressing dreams instead of putting them off until ‘the time is right’, stop wishing and start making your dreams a reality. The beginning of a new year is a fabulous opportunity to make the positive changes that will transform your life.

Here are five excellent reasons why hairdressing is the perfect career for you, and why you shouldn't leave it another twelve months to make your hairdressing dreams happen!

Hairdressing is future-proof

Yes, let’s get the boring responsible reasons out of the way first! While workers in other industries have spent 2018 worrying about the effects of Brexit or robots stealing their jobs, hairdressers can relax in the knowledge their skills will always be in high demand. After all, even when the pennies are pinching people will always need to get their hair cut! As far as job security is concerned, hairdressing is one of the most economically bullet-proof careers you could ever choose.

There’s fantastic earning potential

We’re not going to lie – being an apprentice or junior hairdresser can sometimes feel like you’re putting in a lot of hard work and long hours for a relatively small financial reward. But that’s pretty much the same for every profession. The fact is, once you’ve established yourself, developed a regular clientele and proven what you can do, hairdressing can be a very lucrative career. Experienced stylists can earn upwards of £25,000 a year and salon managers can expect to earn even more. For brand spokespeople and successful hairdressers at the peak of their profession, the earning potential can be much, much higher.

It’s flexible

Who wants to be tied down to 9-5 working hours and the ‘same old-same old’ daily routine? If you’re prepared to put in the hard yards, you can become a successful hairdresser and still find time to achieve the perfect work/life balance. You could rent a chair in a salon, work out of your own home, go mobile, or become a session stylist. There’s massive opportunity to choose your own hours and become your own boss.

Indulge your wanderlust

When you’re a hairdresser, you can take your skills anywhere in the world. You could work on a cruise ship and spend your free-time enjoying the sights your friends at home can only dream about… you could go travelling and, if you’ve got the right papers and visas (which, of course, everybody needs if they’re going to work abroad), you’ll find your styling talents will always be in demand when you need to make some money… you could even follow the seasons around the world and work in an exotic spa during the summer and a romantic mountain resort during the winter (or why not just enjoy summer all year round?!) If your fingers are itching to pick up the hairdressing scissors and your feet are itching to trot the globe, a hairdressing career is your passport to happiness.

And, while we’re on the subject of happiness…

Hairdressing is one of the happiest jobs in the world

Go on, take a look at any ‘Happiest jobs in the world’ survey and you’ll find hairdressing is always at the top of the list or never very far behind. Everyone wants work that will offer them job satisfaction, but hairdressing offers job satisfaction plus so much more. You’ll get to use your talents and creativity every day, meet lots of new people, develop your skills, and let your personality shine. You’ll also be making your customers feel very, very good about themselves whenever they look in the mirror and see the magic you’ve worked on them. With all this and good money too… is it any surprise that hairdressers are such happy people?
