Is your salon ready for summer?
When it comes to summer, hairdressing clients can be as unpredictable as the British weather. Between getting ready for the holidays, and working harder than usual to cover for the people who are already enjoying their holidays, there’s usually so much to do that nobody has time to think about getting a fabulous new haircut. That’s why, if you want to stay ahead of your competition, you’ll need some sizzling and savvy marketing ideas to lure more customers through your doors. Here are some of our favourites – which ones do you think your salon will be using?
Put your salon on display!
This sounds like a no-brainer, but we’re often so busy working our hairdressing magic that we completely forget the client-pulling-power of our salon window. So, take a look at your salon window right now. When was the last time you changed things around? What could you do to give it a more summery, welcoming theme? With a little fun and imagination, you could make your salon memorable and tempt more passers-by into your chair, or at least make them put “I must go there for a haircut” right at the top of their holiday to-do list!
Themed events are a great way to get clients’ heads turning – especially if you hold them in the early evening, so your customers have got something to look forward to after they finish work. You could focus on anything from beach hair to bridal hair, give free consultations and/or demonstrations of how to achieve the latest stylish looks, or maybe even offer some free mini-treatments (like a manicure, pedicure or head massage) before giving your lucky guests a discounted cut or colour. You could also take the opportunity to promote the products and accessories you sell in your salon, offering them a ‘one night only’ special discount. If you focus on easy-to-pack-in-a-suitcase products, your stock will be sold out before the evening’s over! Or how about charging a small entry fee (and giving everyone a free gift) or holding a raffle with a hamper of hair products – or a salon voucher? – as the star prize. And don’t forget to provide plenty of drinks and nibbles to really put everyone in a relaxed, summery mood.
Add in some add-ons
Everybody loves a bargain, especially during the summer when we’re all saving our pennies so we can spend more when we get to the resort! So, with that in mind, why not offer an enticing ‘add-on’ to everyone who comes in for a haircut? It could be a free hair treatment, a selection of product samples, a half-price voucher for their next visit, or a prize draw where they could win anything from sun lotion and flip-flops to a meal-for-two at a local restaurant. In fact, if you team up with a nearby business and do a bit of nifty cross-promotion, the summer could be a win-win for both of you!
Reward your clients’ loyalty
Summer is the perfect time to say thank you to all your regular customers, and there’s no better way to say thank you than with a loyalty card. The loyalty card could include some exclusive offers or discounts or even a 2-for-1 deal so they can bring a friend with them on their next visit (and they’ll both only get charged half price.) In fact, ‘bring a friend’ promotions are perfect for attracting new clients to your salon at any time of year, but especially during the hit-and-miss summer months. Your regular customers will appreciate feeling special too.
Don’t forget social media
It doesn’t matter how busy things get, your clients will always find a few minutes in the day to check their favourite social media feeds, and you’ll want to be ready for them when they do! So, make sure your Facebook page / Instagram page etc. is up-to-date with your latest special offers and consider offering some extra incentives like exclusive deals and giveaways. Also, make sure you post plenty of photos to show off the fabulous work your stylists are doing and use trending hashtags (like #summerholiday or #beachready) to get your pictures more views. Quirky, feel-good posts are a fantastic way to engage customers, too, especially when you use quotes or images that really define your salon’s brand.
Think about the kinds of places your customers go when they’re not working. Do they meet their friends for coffee at the nearby café, or sweat it out at the Pilates class at the local gym? What about the parent & toddler morning at the community centre, or the lunchtime Weight Watchers meeting? Slow summer days are the perfect time to print out some colourful flyers or business cards and introduce yourself to the people who are running those events. If you offer them a free haircut and win them over with your sensational stylist’s charm, they’ll be sure to recommend your services!
