The bad news about Internships
According to a recent report, ‘Landing an internship has become way more important and complex than anyone’s acknowledging.’
Jeffrey J. Selingo, author of ‘There Is Life After College’, says that over the decades “the rules about hiring changed. internships are increasingly the only [his italics] way for new applicants to get in the door at some companies.”
However, there are several problems with internships. They are very hard to find. They are very lowly paid or not paid at all. And interns are almost exclusively university graduates who are usually already many thousands of pounds in debt after completing their studies. More worryingly than that, an internship may provide valuable work experience but it is not always a guarantee of a job.
This is why an apprenticeship is a much smarter choice. At the LHAA, our apprentices Earn while they Learn – they have a job with one of our prestigious salon partners as soon as they start the course, and they earn a regular wage. There are no fees, no hidden costs, and no anxiety about finding work at the end of their training. Even better, the skills they learn at the LHAA will last them a lifetime, never get hijacked by technology, and will open up a whole world of exciting opportunities.
But Jeffrey J. Selingo is right – the rules about hiring have changed. And apprenticeships are unquestionably the new way forward.
